Thiago Pinto Barbosa ist derzeit als Akademischer Rat am Institut für Sozial- und Kulturanthropologie der Universität Leipzig tätig, wo er eine Habilitation mit den Schwerpunkten Energiewende, sozioökologische Konflikte und die Zukunftsgestaltung indigener Völker im Zusammenhang mit dem Lithiumabbau in Brasilien durchführt. Vor Leipzig hat Dr. Barbosa Anthropologie und Sozialwissenschaften in Brasilien und Deutschland studiert und an der Universität Bayreuth promoviert. Seine Dissertation wurde mit dem Frobenius-Forschungspreis 2023, dem Dissertationspreis 2023 des Deutschen Historischen Instituts London und dem Fritz-Steppat-Dissertationspreis 2024 ausgezeichnet.

This lecture examines how generative artificial intelligence (IAg) is reshaping the archive as a system of knowledge in the post‑digital era. Building on Luciano Floridi’s notion of a “fourth revolution,” which displaces humans from the centre of the infosphere, the study explores the epistemic, ethical, and political implications of large language models and other generative systems. Their opacity, the limited digitisation of cultural heritage, and the growing phenomenon of self‑referential data contamination challenge traditional practices of verification and undermine trust in digital knowledge infrastructures. Drawing on Derrida’s concept of archontic power, the paper argues that IAg transforms the archive from a space of consultation into a synthetic, interpretive apparatus that mediates, filters, and rewrites memory. This shift produces new forms of authority, erases direct reference to sources, and generates a living, self‑modifying archive.
The analysis engages with artistic projects such as Rogelio Séptimo’s Exhumar la Memor.IA, which use IAg to create synthetic images based on oral testimonies and family photographs. These works illuminate both the potential and the risks of IAg: they can enrich the archive by visualising marginalised memories, yet they also reinforce Western archival paradigms that privilege written or codified forms of knowledge. Through the lenses of memory studies and critical AI scholarship, the paper argues that generative AI simultaneously expands and destabilises the archive, raising urgent questions about authenticity, authority, and the future of collective memory in an era where machines increasingly produce the very data from which they learn.

Johanna Vollmeyer is a research associate at Universidad Complutense de Madrid (UCM), where her research focuses on the intersections of literature and memory studies with trauma, power, and violence, as well as the constructions of identity and alterity. She is currently exploring new conceptualizations of time and memory in the postdigital age. She served on the Executive Committee of the Memory Studies Association (MSA) and is a co-founder of the research group ReOTi (Rethinking the Order of Time, a Working Group of the MSA) and the MSA Regional Group RIEM (Red Ibérica de Estudios de Memoria). She is member of the research group LEETHI (European and Spanish Literatures from Texts to Hypermedia) and co-editor of the Brill book series Mobilizing Memory. Currently she is the chair of the program committee for the MSA conference 2026. Among her most recent publications are “Fiktionalisierte Vergangenheit? – Doing memory im postdigitalen Zeitalter”. Im WOC Book Talk #5  zum gerade erschienenen Sammelband Wissenschaft im Widerspruch des WOC GradNet spricht Martin Herrnstadt mit Katharina Nowak, Jessica Nuske und Jonas Trochemowitz aus dem Autor*innenkollektiv über aktuelle Debatten und gesellschaftliche Herausforderungen rund um Wissenschaftsfreiheit.

Im Anschluss ist das Publikum herzlich eingeladen, mitzudiskutieren, Fragen zu stellen und eigene Perspektiven einzubringen.

Workshop und Treffen der Kommission Europäisierung/Globalisierung: Ethnografien des Politischen der Deutsche Gesellschaft für empirische Kulturwissenschaft (DGEKW) in Kooperation mit dem Institut für Ethnologie und Kulturwissenschaft (IfEK), dem Bremer Institut für Kulturforschung (bik) und dem WOC Lab Radical Futures an der Universität Bremen.

Künstliche Intelligenz dringt zunehmend in unsere Alltage ein. Dabei erleben wir eine umfassende „KI-sierung“ auch politischer Öffentlichkeiten und Institutionen. KI ist in den Daten- und Energiehunger der Tech-Industrie eingebunden und verflechtet sich dort teilweise mit rechts-autoritären Politiken. Im Zentrum gesellschaftlicher, journalistischer und akademischer Debatten über die weitreichenden und oft schwer greifbaren Folgen steht vor allem die Frage, wie Generative KI (Large Language Models (LLMs) wie ChatGPT etc.) soziale und politische Ordnungen kontinuierlich verändert: etwa in den Bereichen Bildung, Vielfalt und Gerechtigkeit, Umwelt und Nachhaltigkeit, städtische und ländliche Lebensräume, Popkultur und Soziale Medien sowie in zentralen Staats- und Sicherheitsapparaten wie Verwaltung, Polizei, Militär, Gefängnissen und Grenzregimen. Durch ihre Gestaltung, voreingenommene Datensätze und extraktive Logiken reproduzieren KI-Systeme dabei bestehende koloniale, rassistische und heteropatriarchale Machtkonstellationen auf paternalistische Weise. Besonders brisant erweist sich die KI-sierung in den aktuellen Debatten um die Gefährdungen demokratischer Prozesse und Zukünfte. Hinzu kommen weltweit und auch hierzulande Verschiebungen in und Angriffe auf rechtsstaatliche Strukturen, politische Grundrechte und Diskursräume, die zunehmend unter dem Begriff der Faschisierung verhandelt werden. Gefährdungen entstehen gerade dann, wenn Entscheidungen, Streitigkeiten und die Bearbeitung von Widersprüchen an KI delegiert werden und KI-Systeme in die „Nervenzentren der Faschisierung“ (Toscano) eindringen – also in jene Institutionen und Räume, in denen autoritäre Repression und Gewalt ausgeübt und normalisiert werden.

Vor diesem Hintergrund laden wir zu einem Austausch über die Auswirkungen der KI-sierung auf das Politische ein. Gemeinsam wollen wir Herausforderungen und Fragen diskutieren, die sich aus diesen Entwicklungen für die Empirische Kulturwissenschaft, Politische Anthropologie und Politikwissenschaft, Science and Technology Studies (STS), Gender Studies, Contradiction Studies, Medien– und Umweltethnologie sowie die Public Anthropology ergeben.

Format
Diese Veranstaltung ist ein Workshop. Statt klassischer wissenschaftlicher Vorträge, liegt der Fokus auf gemeinsamem Arbeiten und Diskutieren rund um die zuvor beschriebenen Themen und Fragestellungen. Workshop-Teilnehmer*innen halten keinen eigenen Vortrag. Im Vorfeld wird eine Leseliste zirkuliert. Eine Podiumsdiskussion ist mit Aktivist*innen und engagierten Wissenschaftler*innen geplant. Alberto Toscano hält eine Keynote am Abend des 12. November 2026.
Die Veranstaltung findet zweisprachig statt (Deutsch/Englisch).

Artificial intelligence is increasingly permeating our everyday lives. In the process, we are witnessing a comprehensive „AI-sation“ of political publics and institutions. AI is embedded in the data and energy demands of the tech industry and, in part, intertwined with right-authoritarian politics. At the center of societal, journalistic, and academic debates about the far-reaching and often difficult-to-grasp consequences stands the question of how Generative AI (Large Language Models such as ChatGPT, etc.) continuously transforms social and political orders: for instance in education, diversity and justice, environment and sustainability, urban and rural living spaces, pop culture and social media, as well as in central state and security apparatuses such as administration, police, military, prisons, and border regimes.

Through their biased datasets, and extractive logics, AI systems reproduce existing colonial, racist, and heteropartriarchal power constellations in a paternalistic manner. Particularly pressing is the role of AI-sation in current debates about threats to democratic processes and futures. Worldwide – and also in Germany – we are witnessing shifts and attacks on the rule of law, fundamental political rights and public discourse, increasingly discussed under the term fascistization. Threats emerge precisely when decisions, disputes, and the handling of contradictions are delegated to AI, and when AI systems infiltrate the “nerve centers of fascistization” (Toscano) – that is, institutions and spaces where authoritarian repression and violence are exercised and normalized.

Against this backdrop, we invite you to join a collaborative conversation on the impacts of AI-sation on the political. Together, we aim to explore the challenges and questions arising for Empirical Cultural Studies, Political Anthropology, Political Science, Science and Technology Studies (STS), Gender Studies, Media and Environmental Anthropology, and Public Anthropology.

Format
This is a workshop – with a keynote lecture of Alberto Toscano on the evening of November 12, 2026. A panel discussion is planned with activists and engaged scholars.
Rather than traditional academic lectures or presentations, the focus lies on collaborative thinking and discussion around the themes and questions outlined above. Participants will not deliver individual talks. A reading list will be circulated in advance.
The event will be held bilingually, in German and English.

We welcome colleagues and interested individuals of all status groups (including students) to apply, regardless of prior research experience with AI or AI-sation.
